# Whatever He tells you to do; do it!

All right. Well, it’s so good to be with you this morning. God bless you for coming out and getting ready and having your cup of coffee and coming on out to the house of the Lord. Amen.

And it’s good to be here, isn’t it? I wouldn’t be the place in all the world. God’s house on God’s day with God’s book, God’s promises. My, I feel little preaching coming on. Amen? It’s just so good to be here today. Appreciate all the good time that we had with the men.

The last couple of days, what just a refreshing time it is, really. Thank you so much, preacher, for giving the opportunity to spend some time and preach to the men. I know we had all the wives and were praying, oh, God, help my husband. Amen, just praying for them, amen. He’d get old-time religion. So we thank the Lord for it. It’s so important.

And I know that the church here, I’ve just been burdened about it. The church here, I know that you foot a lot of the bill of what happened the last two days. And a lot of churches won’t do that anymore. They really won’t. If they can’t recover their cost, then they look at it as something that’s not worth it, but you take a lot of the brunt of that, and that’s a huge blend that just shows that it’s a ministry. It is really an outreach, and God bless you for that. I’m just thankful. That’s a good testimony of your church. Of course, your leadership, your pastor.

And good to see these young people sing it. Amen. They did a fantastic job. That just blessed my heart so much. And wow. You know, there are a lot of parents all across America that wish that their kids were singing in church. Amen. You kids, I just don’t even know how much of a blessing you are really to do that. That is just a wonderful, wonderful thing. And I hope that God continues to put a song in your heart. That’s just a wonderful thing. Thank you, Brother Aaron, for working dealing you with that. That’s just a blessing.

Well, I’m going to ask you to take your Bibles and look with me to the book of John, and we’re going to look at the chapter, John chapter number two. And I want to begin reading with verse number one. John chapter two, verse number one. If you’re able to stand, let’s go ahead and stand together for the reading of God’s word. I know we all settle down for a long winter’s nap. That’s why I want you to stand. Amen.

So John chapter 2 and verse number 1 is where we’re going to be looking at. To be honest with you this morning, I kind of feel a little bit ashamed of it, but I’m going to be preaching a woman sermon tonight. Amen. So y’all just bear with me, all. I’ve had to break my pride. I’m going to be preaching a woman sermon. You’ll understand it here in just a minute, okay? No, my wife didn’t ride this for me, amen. But you’ll see what I’m talking about here in just a moment. John chapter 2.

Number one, the Bible says in the third day there was a marriage in Canaan, and the mother of Jesus was there. And both Jesus was called and his disciples to the marriage. And when they wanted wine, the mother of Jesus saith unto him, they have no wine. Jesus saith unto him, woman, what have I to do with thee? Mine hour is not yet come.

His mother saith unto the servants, whatsoever he saith unto you, do it. Amen. That’s the sermon that I’m preaching on right there. Amen. Mary said to the servants, whatever he tells you to do, do it. Amen. So I’m preaching Mary’s sermon this morning. Amen. Whatever he tells you to do, do it. Now look what happens. When you do what Jesus tells you to do, look what happens. All right.

He says unto him, whatsoever saith unto you do it, verse number six. And there were set there six water pots of stone after the manner of purifying of the Jews containing two or three Perkins apiece. Jesus saith unto them, fill the water pots with water.

And they filled them up to the brim. And he saith unto them, draw out now and bear under the governor of the feast, and they bear it. When the ruler of the feast had tasted the water that was made wine and knew not whence it was, but the servants which drew the water knew, the governor of the feast called the bridegroom and saith.

Every man at the beginning doth set forth good wine, and when men have well drunk, then that which is worse, but thou hast kept the good wine until now. This beginning of miracle did Jesus in Cana of Galilee, and manifested his glory and his disciples believed on him.

And I want to preach this morning on that topic is believing disciples believed on him.

Now, just to be clear, when they wanted wine, there’s no way that the Lord is going to turn water into something that could bring a curse into the home of this young couple. So there’s no way that you can prove that the wine that Jesus made was an intoxicating beverage. I’ve got 75 verses that I keep with this message here, 75 verses from the Bible that prove that God never ever approves the intaking of intoxicating beverage. The Bible says wine is a marker. Boy, this day and age right now, it’s incredible to me how many people have just turned to this social drinking, drinking wine at the supper table, Christian people drinking wine and drinking alcoholic beverages. Listen, there’s no way that the Lord is going to turn this water into a kind of a beverage that would make this man a wife-beater or a child abuser or a thief or somebody that would lose his judgment, amen, because he’s intoxicated because he’s drunk, amen.

And this message is not dedicated to that, but just because the way some of you were looking at me, I thought I might need to put it in. Amen? All right, so that’s just the way it is, okay? And when they wanted wine, amen, the Bible says, so that we know that they ran out, they ran out, and they didn’t have any way to get any more. No way.

And so Mary, the mother of Jesus, says unto her son, the Lord Jesus, they have no wine. Now, just the way she says it to Jesus, you know that there’s more than just making that statement. I mean, they have no wine. They’ve run out. They have no wine. I mean, there’s more in that sentence than just that. Now, what did Mary mean by that?

I think that she wanted something of this because of this. The way that she gave that to the Lord, she presented that. The way she expresses, the problem is a simple and a subtle suggestion to the Lord Jesus that you need to help them. Here’s a young couple. It’s their wedding day. They have run out and they need help.

Now remember, up to this time here, there had been no miracles to look back to. This is literally the very first miracle that Jesus has performed here, and we’re looking at the aftermath of it. So when Mary saw Jesus with his disciples, and she knew about him being God’s son, and she knew that he was here for a special mission, and maybe, just maybe, it was possibly coming into focus. So somehow Mary, when Jesus came with the disciples, Mary saw Jesus and maybe she just said, you know, something is, maybe this is the time, maybe something is going to happen here. So she knew that her son was capable of helping this young couple somehow through this, though his glory had not been revealed up to this point.

So Jesus responds to his mother with, Jesus saith unto her, woman, what have I to do with thee? My hour is not yet come. Now that sounds like a harsh statement to us, but it really wasn’t, it wasn’t really that harsh when you look at it in the language of the day here. But maybe Jesus was saying to his mother, now you had been watching over me all my years, and now I seem to be moving into my public work and you’re anxious and I shall do something that will reveal the meaning of my personality, the meaning of my mission. So Jesus has now walked out from underneath her as his mother, and he has walked into his mission as her God.

Look at verse number four. Jesus saith unto her woman, what have I to do with thee? In other words, he’s saying, what do we have in common? My hour is not yet come. My glory has not been revealed.

But Mary just sidestepped all of that because she knew, somehow she knew, that he could help. In some way, look at verse number five. His mother saith unto the servants, whatsoever he saith unto you, do it. So the first question was, she said to the Lord Jesus, they have no wine. And then you go through this at dialogue. And then Mary responds to all of this, right directly to the servants, and she says to them, now whatever he tells you to do, you do it.

Now remember, there’s nothing to look back to, no examples to look back to. Mary really doesn’t know. She may seem to be perceiving that he’s coming into his public ministries. But she says, whatever he saith unto you, do it.

So Jesus says there are six water pots that are made of stone, probably for washing. The Jews were notorious for the different washings that they’d go through. But Jesus says to the servants, I want you to fill up those water pots of stone. I want you to fill them up to the brim. So the Bible said the servants did fill them up to the brim.

And then he says, now I want you to draw out the water, and I want you to serve the guests, the contents that you had put in it. And so the Bible says that the governor, of course, took his goblet, took the chalice, the cup, and he drank, and he was so impressed. I mean, he says he absolutely impressed, and he brought the groom over, and he says, man, listen, the way most of the time it happens, you served the best for first and the worst last, but no, you didn’t do that. You served the very best for the last, taking care of your guest. And, I mean, he was very, very impressed.

Now, remember, nobody knew the servants. I mean, they knew that they had just put water in those water pots. So here you have these servants, and they’re filling up these water pots with water, okay? And then they have to fill up those water pots with the pitcher. They fill those pitchers up with the water out of the water pots.

Now, we don’t know exactly where the miracle took place. We don’t know if the miracle took place when they put the water in the water pots. We don’t know if the miracle took place when they took the water out of the water pots and put it into the pitcher. We don’t know if the miracle took place when they poured the water that they had put in the pitcher into the goblet, but somewhere there there was a miraculous change took place. And nobody knew about it, but the servants, amen.

You know, that’s just kind of a side note that, man, listen, when you serve the Lord, when you find your position of service in the Lord’s work, you’ll see things that a lot of people never get to see. Amen? Man, it’s so good to be on that side of it all. Praise the Lord for it. Amen.

Now personally, I believe that the miracle took place. Now, this is just, this is not theology, this is just Oliverology. Amen? I think probably the water, they put the water in the water pots, it was still water. And I think when they put the water, took the water from the water pots of the pitcher, I think it was still water. But I think when they took the water that was in the pitchers and poured into the goblet, amen, I think that’s where the miracle took place. And I can just about imagine how those servants looked at it when they saw that come out. Remember, nobody else knew about any of this except the servants. The guests at the wedding, they didn’t know anything about it. Amen, they didn’t know anything. They just saw it all took place.

You see, the beginning of miracles, the Bible says in verse 11, the beginning of miracles did Jesus in Cana of Galilee, and manifested his glory and his disciples believed on him. Now, who were the disciples? Well, we know that the Bibles were Andrew and Simon Peter and Philip and Nathaniel. And I want you to see that when Jesus turned the water into wine, he silently and suddenly affected change on the water. He turned the water into wine. But remember, it all goes back possibly to his mother, Mary, because she’s the one that said, whatever he tells you to do, do it. And the servants did do that, and they saw this miracle take place.

Now, what I am preaching to you this morning is this. A lot of times the reason why people don’t see God working in their lives is because they don’t do what Jesus tells them to do. It’s just as simple as that. The Christian life is not really hard to do. The hard part of it is us getting out of the way, amen. It’s just dying to flesh. It’s crucifying the flesh, amen, and crucifying our own desires and our own hard-headed times.

He just simply saying, Mary just said, if you’ll do what Jesus tells you to do, then let’s see what’s going to happen. And I’m telling you, my friend, if you want to see the Lord working in your life, then you’re just going to have to determine that you’re going to do what Jesus tells you to do. Amen? Oh, listen, I’m preaching Mary’s sermon to you this morning. Amen. I mean, just like he turned water into wine, he turns sinners into saints. Amen. Hey, just like he turns a raging waters into calm seas. Brother, listen, like he turned water into wine. He turned a mutilated maniac into missionary. He turns funerals into banquets and burdens into blessings. Amen. He saves the best for lives. What he does inspires the believing disciples to believe on him more and their faith becomes stronger.

Oh, I just believe that if we had just determined that we’re going to do what Jesus says to do, our lives would be different. I mean, there are people that are listening to me this morning, and everywhere you turn around, you’re hitting a brick wall, pow! Everything that you’re trying to do, man, it just barriers. Everything that you want to happen, bam, it just stops. Everything that you want to happen, man, it just is a dead standstill. Why don’t you just try doing what God tells you to do and see if things are going to change for you?

I’m preaching tonight on whatever He saith unto you today. I want to sayeth unto you doing. I want to look with me first of all to Matthew chapter 6 and verse number 33. Matthew chapter 6 and verse number 33, these are the words of the Lord Jesus Christ. And the Bible says, but seek ye first the kingdom of God and His righteousness. And all these things shall be added unto you.

Return in life, it ought to be, is this what Jesus wants? I mean, listen, if you are headed to maybe you want your job, wants to give you some kind of a promotion. And maybe that promotion may say you’re going to have to leave your family, leave your church family, and go somewhere else. Maybe it’s a great big giant pay hike. But the first thing, if you want to live this verse out, you have to first say, is this what the Lord wants? But seek ye first the kingdom of God and His righteousness. And all these things shall be added under you.

Just think if we approach life. Amen. All there are people that get themselves in terrible financial debt. Just think about what would happen if we just, before every major purpose of purchase, that if we would just stop and say, does God want me to buy this? Does God want me to get over this? Does God want me to step out and take on this payment plan or do this? Hey, seek ye first the kingdom of God. Take it to Jesus, amen. Ask Jesus, do you want this? First the kingdom of God and His righteousness and all these things shall be added under you.

No, listen, you want to see miraculous things take place in your life. And you’ve got to do what Jesus tells you to do. Mary said to the servants, whatever he says to do it. And they did it. And they saw God take this water and miraculously turn it into wine. Non-alcoholic beverage. Do I need to say that again, amen? Non-alcoholic beverage. But seek you first, the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added unto you.

You know, I remember hearing a brother Curtis Hudson preach a message at the Miller Road Baptist Church in Texas when I was a teenager. And I remember Curtis Hudson telling a story about a man by the name of Bill King. Now what is ironic about that story is, is I ran into that man, Bill King. I was helping Dr. Joe Boyd do a revival meeting in St. Charles, Missouri, and I ran into Bill King, the story, the man that was in the story that Curtis Hudson told him. I ran into him.

And I remember Curtis Hudson told a story about a revival meeting that he was having at his church when he pastored. And he said, in his church, he said, got home from work. And when he got home from work, they had developed some kind of a water leak in his house. And they had about an inch, an inch of water water in the kitchen in the dining room. And, man, it was revival week. And it was like, man, what do we do? Do we stay here? Do we go to revival? What do we do?

So he went, this man, Curtis Hussein, got a drill, and he drilled a hole right in the center of the floor, and all the water went out into that hole, you know, went out in that hole, and his wife’s like, what in the world are you doing? He says, we’ve got revival tonight, and we’ve got this problem, but I don’t want a revival meeting. And he said, I’m drilling a hole in it, the water’s going to leak out. When I get back, I’ll fix, I’ve turned the water off, I’ll fix the leak, we’ll plug the floor, nobody will ever know. That’s what he did.

Well, I heard him tell that story. Well, I met that man fantastic because he said, yeah, my name is Bill King, and he said, I used to go to Curtis Hudson’s church. And I said, I think I heard a story about you. And he chuckled, and he told me the story. Amen.

Now, folks, look at me now. I think that is a good illustration of what Jesus is saying, but seek ye first the kingdom of God. Now, I think the Lord understands health issues and things like that, and I think that there are times when we truly are providentially hindered that we cannot come, but most of the time we can. We just have to determine that we are going to put the Lord first. He deserves the first of your day, and he deserves the first of your pay. Whatever he says for you to do, do it.

The reason why so many people, they just never seem to get ahead. They never get ahead is because they just don’t do the simple things. Mary said, whatever he says to you to do, then just do it, and they did it. And they’re the only ones that knew what had taken place in that story, Jesus turning the water into non-alcoholic wine. Amen.

Number one, do what he tells you to do. Seek you first, the kingdom of God in his righteousness. Look with him in Matthew chapter 7 in verse number 6. This is another thing that Jesus tells us to do. He says in Matthew chapter 7 and verse number 6, he says this.

The Lord says this to us, give not that which is holy under the dogs, neither cast ye your pearls before swine, lest they trample them under their feet and turn again and renew. Now think about those words there. Give not that which is holy under the dogs. What is it that we have that possess that’s holy? Well, we know that there’s holy matrimony. Amen. There is holy matrimony, the union of a man and a woman to be wedded together. That’s holy.

Well, I think God is saying those of us who are saved and have a spouse, we’re married, you better be real careful that you’re not just, that you’re not abusing that. That you’re just not in it for yourselves. That’s not totally, absolutely committed. Amen? That if you’re a husband that you are committed to loving your wife as Christ loved the church. Don’t give that which is holy to the dogs. You better do everything that you know to do to make sure that your spouse is being cared for, that they’re being loved, that they feel like they’re being loved, that they have confidence that you care about them and you love them and that you’re faithful to them, amen, all the way. Don’t cast that which is holy to the dogs.

You have a Christian wife, a Christian husband, then you cherish that. You hold on to that, amen. I mean, you give those expressions of love. I mean, you go overboard. You just do it. You show it. You speak it. You tell it. Amen. Don’t give that. Amen. Don’t be critical of each other in public places. Amen. Don’t do that. Amen. Don’t correct them. Don’t do that in public. You just show utmost respect. Don’t give that which is holy unto the dogs.

There probably need to be some husbands and wives come to this whole-fashioned altar today. And you need to just recommit your love and your faithfulness to each other. Amen. If you have a Christian wife, a Christian husband, you be thrilled. I know that they’re not all that they need to be. Neither are you. Buster and Busterette. Amen. That’s exactly the way it is. We’re just, we’re all going to fall short. Amen. We all fall short. All right. Don’t give that which is holy to dogs. This is what Jesus said. Don’t give that which is holy to the dogs. Don’t cast your pearls before swine. Amen?

Oh, listen, in other words, you cherish the things that are for you. Listen, your family is precious. Oh, listen, we know that children may do things that break our hearts. We understand that. And we understand that people can get dismayed, but listen, you love. And your love needs to be like God’s love unconditional. Now that doesn’t mean you compromise on the scriptures to love unconditional. God doesn’t compromise. Amen. And he’s holy and righteous. And he loves us still. And we can follow his example. Amen.

Oh, listen, don’t cast your pearls before swine. That which is holy, don’t cast it to the dogs. And by the way, one of the most precious pearls that God has given us is our testimony. Our life live before the public. Amen. Your testimony at work. Your testimony around your family. Your testimony in your neighborhood. Amen. Don’t cast your pearls before swine. If it’s precious and holy and godly, hey, take care of it. Amen. Thank God when somebody does ruin their testimony, you can repair it, amen. But it takes some diligence to do that.

I want you to notice also Matthew chapter 15 verse number four. This is another thing that Jesus said. Hey, remember Mary said, do what he ever, do what he tells you to do. Do what he tells you to do. And they did it and they saw the miracle. They saw Jesus turn the water into wine. By the way, that’s non-alcoholic. Amen, just to make sure you understand.

Matthew chapter 15:4 the Bible says for God commanded saying honor thy father and mother. Hey, isn’t that amazing? Honor thy father and thy mother. Young people to stand up all right. All the if you’re 18 years of age and younger all right, 18 years of age and younger stand up. Come on stand up stand up now look at me kids look at me.

God’s word says to you, honor your father and your mother. Now, for those of us that are older, it doesn’t say now when you get married and have kids and you need to stop honoring your parents. You honor them. And as a matter of fact, that word honor in that context, it means financial support. That’s where we get the word honorarium. In other words, it means that adult children should honor their parents. That means you ought to do things for them and I’m putting this, making an application, but you ought to purchase things, you ought to buy things for them, you ought to show, express your love to them on their birthdays and anniversaries and special days. Honor your father. It’s where we heard honorarium. Honorarium. Monetary gift. Honor your parents. And it’s not necessarily that they need the gift. You know what the real issue is? We need to spend the money and it’s really for us. It’s more blessed to give than receive. It’s not that they need it. It’s that we need to give it.

Young people in your context and the context of you, that means respect them. And that means love them. Now, I don’t know if your moms and dads are Christian people. And if they’re not Christians, then the burden really falls very, very heavy on you. Because your mom and dad, they know you’re coming to this Baptist church. And they know what this church stands for. And they hear you talk about maybe sing these songs. And then when you backtalk them or you fight with your brother and your sister, or they see you doing something that’s wrong or wicked, maybe in school, they got to get on to you, you’re losing your testimony. If your moms and dads are not saved, I mean it ought to be real important, real important to you that you live a true, genuine, look at me, son, look at me, that you live a true, genuine Christian life before your mom and dad.

Now listen, moms and dads are not perfect. I understand that. Listen, there have been a couple of times I’ve had to look at my family and say, listen, I know I’m a hot head and I handle that like a jerk. Please forgive me. I know that I’m not perfect. I know your parents are not perfect, but you’re not either. And they’re going to make mistakes. But you just need to honor them. Honor them. That’s what Jesus said. As a matter of fact, the Bible says if you honor your mom and dad that you’re going to have a long life. That’s what it says, that thy days may be long upon the earth. Have a long life.

Go ahead and sit down. Thank you very much. I was up in Michigan a couple of weeks ago helping my father-in-law. He’s building a house. And one of his friends came over to help him. He’s like 90 years old. He’s built houses all of his life. He just can’t hardly stand it that my father-in-law is building this house. I think he’s 74, building a house. And then this 90-year-old man come, he just can’t stand it. He loves to build, and he just can’t stand it. He just got to be out there.

So we were putting up these walls, and they’re making them make all their walls, two-by-six walls. This one wall that we were standing up, man, had a lot of windows and doors in it. Man, it was a heavy wall to lift up. And here, man, I’m with my father-in-law and then this man here and three of us lifting up these walls and then we’re having to tie that top plate to keep it all secure. So this 90-year-old man is clapped, this six-foot step ladder to nail that top plate. I said, Brother Vern, please, man, I will get up there and nail that. I mean, he acted like it was an insult for me to tell him that. I felt bad about saying it to him because, I mean, he just loves to work.

Later on that day, I said, I bet you, I bet you really, well, I don’t really meant bet, you know, but we use that in our vernacular here. I said, I’m sure that you honored your mom and dad, didn’t you? And he looked at me and he says, you better believe I did. I said, I can tell that you because of your age and your health. Hey, young people. You want to live a good long life? Honor your mom and dad. That’s what Jesus said. Honor thy father and thy mother that thy days may be long upon the earth. Amen? We’re just saying, listen, if you want to see the blessings of God, you want to see miraculous things take place, you’ve got to do what Jesus tells you to do. Amen.

And then lastly, Matthew chapter 22, verse number 37. Matthew chapter 22 verse 37 says this. Jesus said unto him, thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart and with all thy soul and with all thy mind. Here it is. Hey listen, you want to see miraculous things. You want to see God do miraculous things. Then just do what he tells you to do. Amen. And he says in this passage, I want you to love me with all of your heart, your mind and another passage says strength. Amen. Love God with all of your heart, soul, mind and strength. Love me.

You know, this whole thing about the Christian life is about love. It’s a belief about love. It’s a religion about love. If you love me, keep my commandments. Amen. If you love me, do the things that I’m telling you to do. If you love me, hey, pray with your heart and believe with your heart and serve with your heart and love with your heart. Boy, listen, you want to see things change in your life, then just start putting your heart, your heart into it, and it changes everything.

And then he says, finally in Matthew chapter 7, he says this, enter ye in at the straight gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the way that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in there at, because straight is the gate and narrow is the way that leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it. And Jesus says, you need to make sure and trust the straight and narrow way that leads to life. And that will be Jesus’ way. Jesus and I am the way, the truth, and the life, no man cometh unto the Father but by me. There’s only one way to God the Father, and that’s through the Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.

You don’t have to get to God through the Baptistry. Oh, I like to see people baptized. Amen, when they get saved. My mentor, Dr. Boyd, used to say, you want to baptize them while they’re hot. So they’ll get that good Baptist steam rolling off their backs. Amen? Oh, yes, sir, baptized. Listen, but you don’t get to God in the baptistry. You don’t get to God through a Sunday school rollbook. You don’t get to God through catechisms where you memorize certain things in quote verses and make your profession of faith before the church because it’s a ritualistic church ordinance that they perform that everybody. You get to God through Jesus and Jesus alone. Amen? That’s the straight and narrow way.

Man, if you want to change in your life. You want to see things like this incredible miracle of Jesus turning the water into wine, then you just got to do what Mary says to do. Mary said, whatever he tells you to do, do it. And they did it. And they saw this miraculous transformation take place. And I’m telling you, Jesus is still transforming things today. Amen? My mentor used to say, you have to just learn to pray and turn your problems into blessings. Amen. Turn your problems into blessings. Well, if you do what Jesus tells you to do, you can see that take place in your life.
