Chapter number five, Acts chapter number five. It seems like it’s been a while. On a Wednesday, last week we changed midweek service from Wednesday to Thursday, National Day of Prayer. We changed locations. When I made the decision around noon or something, 11:30, it was calling for rain. As soon as you make that decision, the sun came out. If we hadn’t changed, it would have been rain all over, but you change and just…

Man, it’s beautiful weather, you know. So what are you going to do? But just trust and obey. So it’s been two weeks. We’re going through the book of Acts, kind of a Bible study more on Wednesday night. And we’ll start chapter number five. But let’s review, get you caught up a little bit.

There’s this man. He sold his land. It kind of seemed like he had a house, but he had land—some land. He sold that land and brought all the money in and gave it to the apostles. It was just a wonderful time. They dispersed anyone that had need; they took care of them. It was just an amazing time of the church.

His name was Joseph, but the apostles nicknamed him or called him Barnabas. What was his name? You remember his name? Barnabas, good. You get those things in heaven, not down here, you know. Barnabas, yeah. And it’s interesting. They’re the ones that named him that: son of consolation, comfort, or encouragement. And God used Barnabas a lot in the early church. I think sometimes we miss that.

Remember Saul on the road to Damascus. Saul got saved. A little bit later on, he went to Jerusalem, but the apostles, the other guys, they said, “Uh-uh. That guy there, he’s been killing Christians. We’re not going to have anything to do with him.” But it was Barnabas. He said, “Hey, he’s all right,” and he went and got him and brought him into that early church, that was really the hub at the time—headquarters, if you will, a little bit—brought him in there.

Then a little bit later on down in Antioch, people started getting saved, revival was breaking out, and they said, “We’ve got to have somebody go down there and help them.” And Barnabas went down there and helped them. Then Barnabas said, “Man, things are happening down here, things are growing. We need somebody to help us with all this.” Another good leader. And Barnabas went and looked up Paul, found Paul, and said, “Paul, come on over here and help us at Antioch.” Remember Antioch? It became the hub. And it’s the first place where we were called Christians, yeah. And there at Antioch. And then the first missionary sent out of the early church from the church at Antioch was Paul and Barnabas. Yeah. And just a big part of the beginning, the early church.

And then you remember the story—we’ll get into it more later on in the book of Acts—one of the missionary journeys that took a guy named John Mark, and things looked like it got rough, and John Mark quit and turned tail and went home, you know. And later on, another missionary journey, and Paul and Barnabas said, “Let’s take John Mark.” Paul said, “That guy’s a quitter.” Well, they got in a disagreement over their own ways. But later on, really looks like Barnabas was right, because later on, Paul said, “Hey, bring John Mark over here. He’s profitable.” And, in fact, God used that John Mark to write the book of Mark. And God, his life might not have gotten turned around living with the Lord, but for Barnabas. So just greatly used by God.

But I wonder how much of that goes back to when he was a young Christian, that he gave some of his treasure. Where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. He didn’t hold on to it, not giving it, you know, if he ended up living for the Lord all those years and greatly used in the founding, really, of the early church. So that’s kind of where we left it off at two weeks ago. Now we’re in chapter five.

We’re going to start in verse number one, chapter 5 and verse number one. If you’re able to, would you please stand as we read the Word of God? Just to show it respect. We try to do that. I may stop a moment or two here as we read and talk about it, trying to get us engaged, and then we’ll go back and just try to pull out three or four things here tonight, three things here.

The Bible there says, “But a certain man named Ananias, with Sapphira his wife, sold a possession and kept back part of the price; his wife also being privy to it, and brought a certain part and laid it at the apostles’ feet.”

“But Peter said, Ananias, why hath Satan filled thine heart to lie to the Holy Ghost, and to keep back part of the price of the land? Why, as it remained, was it not thine own? And after it was sold, was it not in thine own power? Why hast thou conceived this thing in thine heart? Thou hast not lied unto men, but unto God.”

Let’s just stop for a second. Remember this guy, Barnabas sold the land, gave all the money to the church. Now this couple here, Ananias and Sapphira, they sold their land. We don’t know. Let’s just say they sold an acre or two of land around here. It’s worth a lot of money. The law says it’s $100,000. They sold it for $100,000, and they brought $70,000 of it. That’d be a pretty good deal. No problem there. But they went in front of everybody. By the way, in the interest, he said they laid it down at the apostles’. They just could have just made it kind of gave it secretly, but they came and they laid it down. Look at us. And they said, “Every dime we made off that property, we’re putting it.” Look at us.

Well, they sold it for 100,000. They only got 70,000. Peter said, “It’s yours. You can do whatever you want to do with it. It’s your right to do. It’s yours.” But they came and laid it down, look at us, putting it down in front. Hey, we gave all. And watch what happens. Peter called them out on it. It’s pretty amazing.

Verse number five: “And Ananias hearing these words fell down, and gave up the ghost.” Wow, boy, he’s gone. And great fear came on all of them that heard these things. Not only those that were there, but all those that heard these things. And the young men arose and wound him up and carried him out and buried him.

And it was about the space of three hours after when his wife, not knowing what was done, came in. A couple comments there, right? Number one, if there were cell phones, she had known. If there’s Facebook, she didn’t know. I mean, in our day of communication, she didn’t know, you know. Then did you notice that she came in three hours after her husband? Just coming. Just saying a little note there, you know. I mean, you know. Of course, sometimes it’s the man that’s the late one there, you know, and sometimes it’s different there, you know. But she comes in three hours after.

And let’s see here, verse 8: “And Peter answered unto her, Tell me whether ye sold the land for so much.” And she said, “Yea, for so much.” Then Peter said unto her, “How is it that ye have agreed together?” By the way, it wasn’t just quick; they were premeditated, if you will. I tend to think the Lord had been working on their hearts to give it all. I don’t know that. It serves to do whatever they want. The big thing they came to lie about it. But it wasn’t just quick off the spot. They’d agreed. “How is it that ye have agreed together to tempt the Spirit of the Lord? Behold, the feet of them which have buried thy husband are at thy door, and shall carry thee out.” Then fell she down straightway at his feet, and yielded up the ghost. And the young men came in and found her dead, carrying her forth, buried her by her husband. And great fear came upon all the church and upon as many as heard these things. Boy, that would make you show some respect right there, for sure. And it did.

But let’s pray, and we’re going to dive into this thing a little bit tonight. Would you pray with me that God would speak to our hearts? Father, Lord, help us to glean the truths you want us to get from this tonight. Lord, please speak to us all. These are great people. They’re here in your house on a Wednesday night, so feed them. Lord, please, Lord, give us energy, give us hunger for your word. Well, thank you for what you do. In Jesus’ name we ask, amen. Thank you so much for staying. You may be seated.

How many have ever wondered, “Man, why such a severe punishment?” Anybody ever thought about that? Come on, nobody’s ever thought about it. If you’ve ever thought about why such a severe punishment, raise your hand. Good, all right. I like to make sure not everybody’s dead. We’ve got some living people out there. That’s a good thing. Me too. I’ve wondered about it. Let me just give you a couple of reasons or thoughts along that line. We’re just going to cover a couple of different things.

Number one, lying was not the only sin, but their motive was to appear better Christians than they were. And they just—and by the way, you know, wanting to be popular or be, you know, all that in the church is a horrible thing. And they were lying, yes, but it wasn’t just that. They were really just trying to promote themselves.

Before this, the church, it just seemed like it had wonderful harmony. They were such a state of genuine Christianity, and they had love for one another. They were sharing things. They were taking care of each other. Just a wonderful atmosphere and environment going on. And then you get people that are just trying to promote themselves. You ever see? And sometimes you’ll see this in churches when deacon election comes up, whatnot, and people kind of jockey for position, and it becomes a little bit like a popularity contest or just however. Or you get the clicks in the church, and if you’re in the in-crowd or the popular crowd or the cool crowd—that’s just always a shame for that to happen in the church. And you kind of, you’re kind of… such a pure state of the church, and now you’ve got people bringing in this kind of atmosphere of, “We want to look good to everybody” type thing. And they’re lying, of course, is a horrible thing, and the Bible points that out, but not only that, but they’re just trying to look like they’re all that.

Now, you know one thing about that: if that environment takes over, it destroys true love. And it changes the atmosphere of a church. From a church of love and everyone’s welcome, everyone’s treated the same, and there’s no caste system. You know, it’s just, “Hey, it’s all level at the foot of the cross,” amen? And it kind of changes it. And then you get this little bit of a “to be seen of men” attitude.

Matthew 6 talks a lot about it. In fact, Matthew 6 uses that exact phrase. It’s only used twice, so it’s the exact words “to be seen of men.” It’s used there in Matthew 6, and then it’s used a little bit later on in Matthew talking about the Pharisees. And that’s interesting, “to be seen of men.” Over there in Matthew 6, it also uses this word “reward.” Rewards. Seven times the word “reward” is used in Matthew 6. By the way, that’s not a bad motive of reward. It’s probably not as pure as love, but he didn’t say, “Hey, lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven.” That’s in his sin of God gave us, amen. Not a bad sinful thing. It may not be the best, the purest, but it’s not a bad… a lot of different good motives God gives us. But it’s a reward. He’s used to this seven times at the beginning of Matthew 6. But he says this one time of those seven, one time he says, “No reward.” You’re giving alms, you’re taking care, you’re giving to other people to be seen. I mean, God says, “You’ve got no reward?” It uses this—three times it uses this phrase: “They have their reward.” You know, if their whole motive was for everybody to see them, and they laid it at the apostles’ feet, everybody saw this, you know? And God says, “All right, you got your reward? No reward.” Three times it says, “They have their reward.” Then it says this three times in Matthew 6: “Thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly.” One time it adds a word, “himself,” in there, one of those three. I don’t know about you, but I’d rather be rewarded by the heavenly Father than by people.

But it could bring in this thing where it’s a little bit just… It was so pure, but now it gets to be, you know, “to be seen of men,” to be all that and everything, you know. You know, I love it. And our church is good about this. I really think our church is good about it. And I’m thankful for just loving people and treating everybody the same. We went to a church over in Mississippi, a good church. And I was on the platform with the pastor. I was trying to just look for encouraging things to say to him, and it was very honest, very true. But they had a man in their church—you could tell it was probably a little bit special needs, but he’s one of those special needs, you know. But you could tell he comes to that church every Sunday morning, probably rides a bus, and he wasn’t dressed all that, but you could tell that church, everybody knew him and they kind of loved on him. And I told the pastor, I said, “Man, that’s good to see that young man. Every church ought to have an orphan or two in it. That’s part of a good church. You just love them.” We have our orphans around here, especially on Sunday morning, and I’m thankful our church loves on them. That’s what it ought to be. And it’s really taken away from that and kind of leading the church in a different atmosphere. So…

So one reason, I think, just such severe punishment—because it wasn’t just lying; if not carefully, it’ll really change the atmosphere of the church from just everyone taking care of and loving each other to, “We want to be known as a super spiritual” type thing. You know, God, He’s not for that. It takes away from love. Here’s another fault about it. Here’s another thing about it: the church that was just started. Look over in Ephesians 5. You don’t know these verses, but Ephesians 5. And talking about the church. We use these verses often for marriage, and rightfully so. But it’s also talking about the church here. And notice what it says about the church. Verse number 25, Ephesians 5 and verse number 25. Every husband in the world knows this one so good. Amen, you know. But… “Husband, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church,” notice that, “and gave himself for it, that it might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of the water by the word.” Here’s what I’m getting at: we can read on. God wants a pure church. He wants that. He wants a pure church. And the early church, they were just getting going, and you’re bringing in this really just “look at me” attitude. And God, He wants a pure church. That’s why Jesus died on the cross so He can sanctify and purify. He wants it pure. And boy, they were taking… the early church. What a sad thing. It was very effective after this. There’s fear, respect. Boy, after that, you won’t be careful what kind of attitude you’re bringing into the church. I mean, it couldn’t… It’s gracious. They started the first graveyard out behind the church right there, you know, and they’re just going. And what a sad, sad thing. So it really just changed the atmosphere. And God was not very pleased with that.

This is the interaction of the church at Thyatira over there in Revelation, the seven churches of Asia Minor. They had Jezebel in there. And I want you to notice what the Bible says, Revelation 2:23. He says, it’s pretty strong language. He said, “I will kill her children with death; and all the churches shall know that I am he which searcheth the reins and hearts; and I will give unto every one of you according to your works.” Wow. Pretty strong language. He wants a pure church.

Number three, why such a severe punishment? Not persecution, punishment. Because it wasn’t just lying, but it was really changing, if it weren’t careful, the tone of the church from being very loving and very accepting to spiritual hierarchy. Then God wants a pure church. And then number three: their body.

Well, let’s go back. Let’s go back. Remember in the Old Testament? And He said this in Exodus 25, verse number 8. He said, “Look, I want you to build a temple or a tabernacle because what? I’m going to dwell among you.” Remember that? Where did His glory, where did it center around? Help me out, somebody. Where did it center around? There. There. Yeah, I remember those. He says, “Hey, right between those cherubim right there, that’s where the glory”—remember the fire and the cloud and really the glory of God came. That’s where He dwelt at in the tabernacle, the temple.

Well, let’s go back. Remember over there, actually, in Leviticus 9, they had set up the tabernacle, and the priests began to serve in there. Remember Aaron was the high priest? Aaron had two boys. Anybody remember the two boys’ names? Nadab and Abihu? Remember what happened? Those boys went in there and what did they do? They offered up what? Strange fire. What happened? Boom. They’re gone. Remember a little bit later on? Remember the Philistines had gotten the ark, and they’re bringing it back, and then eventually David, he was going to bring the ark back to Jerusalem there, and remember they were carrying it like the world carried it, like the Philistines, on this cart and the oxen pulling it. And remember, it shook, and this guy, he touched it. What happened to him? Boom.

Now, here in the New Testament, what just happened? Jesus, before He ascended, He said, “Hey,” He breathed on them and said, “Receive ye the Holy Ghost.” No longer do they have a tabernacle or a temple. Now the temple of God is what? Our bodies, the believer’s body. And it indwells. As a newborn again Christian, your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost. See? And that had just happened just a little bit before this. And the Holy Spirit had moved in and indwelt and not only that, but empowered them. In fact, what did He say believers are to be? Ephesians 5:18: “Be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess, but be filled with the Spirit.” It’s sacred. Your body is sacred.

But now they were allowing Satan to come in, essence—if I had allowed Satan to come in and fill their temple with lies and these emotions, “We want to be seen, we want to be all that, we want everybody to look up to us,” and all that. That temple is sacred. And God was kind of at the very beginning to say, “Wait a second, we’ve got a new era, if you will, no longer to have this tabernacle/temple. Your body is the temple. This isn’t just small play here. This is the real deal. Your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost.”

Notice how I keep saying, “You’re lying to the Holy Ghost.” And that’s a big thing. And their body had just became the temple of the Holy Ghost. Look at it, verse number three. Acts 5, verse number three: “But Peter said unto Ananias, Why hath Satan filled thine heart to lie to thee what?” Holy Ghost. Look down if you would please, look in verse number nine. Verse number nine: “Then Peter said unto her [to the wife], How is it that ye have agreed together to tempt the Spirit of the Lord?” See now, the Holy Spirit—lying to the Holy Spirit. I think it’s talking about the Holy Spirit that was living inside of him and all that, but they were lying to the church, to the people. If they’re born again, they have the Holy Spirit living inside of them. There is a line of the Holy Spirit. By the way, when you’re lying to another believer, you’re lying to the Holy Spirit that lives inside of them. Lying to the Holy Spirit inside of you also.

Look if you will, look if you will, over in 1 Corinthians chapter number three, just talking about the Holy Spirit is living inside of them. It’s the temple. He let them know when they made the temple, the original temple, tabernacle back in the Exodus and Leviticus, they started practicing. He said, “No, we’re not going to play this game. They’re having strange fire in there. This is a real deal.” He’s kind of letting the early church know, “Hey, this is a real deal here.”

Look at this over here in 1 Corinthians chapter 3. Look in verse number 16. Y’all there? Amen? Look at this. He says, “Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you?” Watch this, watch this. Look at the next verse. “If any man defile the temple of God, him shall God destroy; for the temple of God is holy, which temple ye are.” Wow. Yeah, and He’s showing us that Ananias and Sapphira were lying to the Spirit of God that’s made their body as temple. And He’s showing, “Hey, this thing’s real. If you’re a born-again Christian, you’re a walking temple.” I think just like they had the temple with the tabernacle back in the day, your body—you’re a walking temple of God. That’s why what you put into it is very important, what you look at, what you say out of all that. Your body is the temple. Hey, the Spirit of God, God Almighty, is living inside. It’s amazing to me that Almighty God comes and lives inside your body. And it’s the temple of God. Wow. And God says, “Now what you do with that, that’s big stuff.” I’m going to show you that at the very beginning here about these folks that are lying to the Holy Spirit of God, and they’re changing the whole spirit of the early church. I’m not happy about that. And He shows us that in the severity of the punishment.

Now, a couple—two more thoughts real quickly here. Were they saved? Has anybody ever thought, “Were they saved?” This part here, I would not say—I would argue about it. It could be argued over; I’ll give you my opinion. I tend to think they were saved. It seems that they knew the Holy Ghost. It says, “You’ve lied to the Holy Ghost,” makes me think they knew of—they knew the Holy Ghost. I tend to think He was living inside of them.

Something else—the reason why I think they were saved: look over in Hebrews chapter number 12 real quick here. Hebrews chapter number 12. And there’ll be an argument; you can go online; there’s an argument back and forth whether they’re saved or not. I tend to think they were. It seems they knew the Holy Spirit. Then this is the fault here. Hebrews 12 and verse number 7: He says, speaking to Christians, “If ye endure chastening, God’s a discipline, God taking out the woodshed, if ye endure chastening, God dealeth with you as with sons; for what son is he of whom the father chastened not? But if ye be without chastisement, whereof all are partakers, then are ye bastards, and not sons.”

Nowadays, you have to be careful spanking your own children, but you don’t smack the neighbor’s kids. How many ever heard back in the day in the early days of America? Back—I’ve heard many, you know, kids are out playing in the neighborhood. Even if your neighbor’s kids are playing at your house and they act up, if you can spank them. Nowadays, you spank your own children, you’re allowed to get sued over or whatnot, you know. It’s a different… Man, you don’t spank the neighbors because you just make your own kids. That’s basically what it’s saying in Hebrews 12. If you belong to God, every once in a while, you won’t get spanking. And I think Ananias and Sapphira were God’s people; they were getting chastised. They were getting spanked by God. By the way, maybe that’s one reason why He didn’t mind taking them home because they were saved. He’s not one of the ones that perish, but they’re also kind of repentance, and they’ve already been born again; they’re already saved. So they went to an early grave and went home to heaven sooner. That is, God does do that sometimes.

Look over, if you will, in 1 John chapter number 5. Not St. John, but 1st John. A little bit of a Bible study on Wednesday night. We do that more; we use our Bibles more; just kind of turning on Wednesday nights. 1 John 5. Look in verse number 14. The Bible gives us this concept. First John is talking to Christians, the family of God. And I want you to notice this term he uses. We’ll start in verse number 14: “And this is the confidence that we have in him, that if we ask anything according to his will, he heareth us.” So the context is prayer. Ask anything according to what He hears us. “And if we know that he hear us whatsoever we ask, we know that we have the petition that we desire of him.” Watch this, verse number 16: “If any man see his brother sin a sin which is not unto death, he shall ask, and he shall give him life for them that sin not unto death.” So you see your brother there in sin. If it’s not a sin unto death, go pray for it. “Lord, have mercy. Give him life.” That’s okay. I’m talking about praying in His will earlier. Now, the bottom of verse number 16: “There is a sin unto death. I do not say that he shall pray for it.” You know, for a born-again Christian, there is a sin unto death. Just like for a lost person when they blaspheme against the Holy Ghost, they tell the Holy Ghost, “No, no, no, no, no, no, no.” So many times God says, “Finally, all right, I’m done. They’ll never get saved.” Not that God’s Jesus’ blood won’t cover their sin, they’ll never go to Jesus because the Holy Spirit will never draw them again. Notice sin against the Holy Spirit are very, very important. But now He says for a born-again Christian, there’s a sin unto death. That doesn’t mean they’re not going to lose their salvation. No. It means they’ve sinned to a point God says, “Hey, you know what? Calling you home early.” You ever go to a ball game, and the kids are just acting up, messing with everybody, you know, in the world? Finally, mom or dad says, “All right, you come up here and sit with me in the bleachers.” Kind of like what God does. “My child down there just won’t live for me anymore. Just not being used by it. Just, just, just, just…” Well, God sometimes calls them home early. It’s sin unto death. And I think that’s what happened to Ananias and Sapphira. God said, “We’re going to bring you home.” So just some reasons why their punishment was so severe, whether they’re saved—I think so.

Then let me just—we’re going to end up with this thought here. Look back in verse number three of Acts chapter 5. Y’all still with me tonight? It’s a little bit more of a Bible study than typical, but I want you just kind of leave this thought with this here, this truth with us here. Acts 5, verse number 3: “But Peter said unto Ananias, Why hath…” What’s the next four words? “Satan filled thine heart?” Wow. The devil can fill a believer’s heart. That’s pretty awesome. “Why hath Satan filled thine heart to lie to the Holy Ghost?” John 13:2 says, “And supper being ended, the devil, having now put into the heart of Judas Iscariot…” Another example in the Bible, the devil putting something into the heart of someone.

This is interesting. We don’t have time to get into it, but over in Zechariah chapter number three, this vision of the high priest, Joshua, and he’s praying. And the Holy Spirit—the devil comes and really starts to interfere with him, you know. Sometimes Satan knows how valuable it is when you pray to God. You’ve heard it said, you know, “Satan laughs when he just… we’re going to get you,” but you get on your knees and Satan trembles. You’ve heard that. How many of you heard something like that? Oh, yeah. And so Satan, Zechariah 3 talks about Satan tries to interfere with your prayer life. You know, it’s amazing. It’s not the most holy moments you have, and the devil can put the darkest thoughts in your mind. And he can fill your heart alive. And, well, the battle there was Satan trying to put thoughts and things in your mind. It is truly the battle.

But here’s a good thing about it. Look over, if you will. You’ve been in First John. Go back over to First John, but go to chapter number four this time. First John, chapter number four. If you’re living for the Lord, no matter what, Satan has tried—him and his demons have tried to put things in your heart. I guarantee you that. He’s always working out of it. He can use this old world system. He’s a prince of the air. He’ll use just every inch he can to fill your heart.

But here’s a wonderful truth. We’ll look back over here in 1 John 4. Look in verse number 3. 1 John 4, verse number 3: “And every spirit that confesseth not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is not of God: and this is that spirit of antichrist, whereof ye have heard that it should come; and even now already is it in the world.” So the spirit of antichrist and the devil working through these spirits, but watch this. Those spirits are trying to fill your heart. Verse number four: “Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is…” What is it? The Spirit in the world? Because greater is what’s the next couple of words? He that is what? In you.

Satan, he can fill your heart, but he’s not in you. He can’t get it because you’re indwelt by the Holy Spirit of God. I mean, He’s living. When you got saved, He moved inside; He regenerated you; your body became the temple of the Holy Ghost; He’s in you. Now Satan is going to try to fill it, but this junk is garbage. He said, “No, you’re my child, and greater is He, that is the Holy Spirit, that is in you, than he that is in the world.”

By the way, not only that, but a born-again Christian, we’ve already mentioned this one time too, but a born-again Christian, He’s indwelling you, but the Bible does tell us, “Hey, there’s like a drunk man is filled or controlled with another substance.” You’re to be filled and controlled by the Holy Spirit of God. He’s filled. By the way, that’s the key to keep him—the devil from filling you—when you’re filled. He’s in you. The devil, he cannot even come close to measuring up with the Holy Spirit. And when Satan is trying to pump his junk in your heart, say, “Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, Holy Spirit, I need your filling.” We stayed in a place and had a coffee maker. Somebody say amen to coffee right there. Amen. And on the left side of it, it had the old-style coffee pot, and on the right side it had a Keurig, and we had some of those pods, you know. And this morning it was—and I was trying to do it. I didn’t want to turn all the lights on and all that. I was up a little bit earlier, whatnot. And so I couldn’t see all those buttons, and I wasn’t used to this. And I put that coffee cup in there and that pot in there, and it filled that thing, and it overflowed. And I’m trying to wipe that thing up so it wouldn’t go, you know, trying to get in the sink. I just splashed it on the sink. And I got something wiped, clean it all, because it just overflowed. When you’re filled with the Holy Spirit, the devil can’t put… So when Satan’s trying to fill you with his junk, say, “Holy Spirit, man, He’s no match for you. Would you fill me?” It’s amazing how sometimes He’ll fill you when maybe Satan’s trying to fill you with just condemnation. Ask the Holy Spirit; He can fill you with God. God loves you. You’re His daughter. You’re His son. He’s so proud of you. Every righteous act of Jesus has ever done is on your account. And God, He’s like a dad wants His little boy, little girl with Him all the time. That’s why God, and the Holy Spirit will fill you with that. When you feel it with maybe… maybe I can’t overcome this sin. Oh, my goodness, you have the Holy Spirit to fill me. And the Holy Spirit says, “Hey, I can fill you. I can strengthen your inner man where you’ll always have a way of escape that you may have to bear it.” That’s the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit can fill you with maybe just have bitterness. And boy, they hurt me. They didn’t treat me right. And as I’m battling, I don’t think I have it in me. You have the Holy Spirit, and He can fill you with love and forgiveness. And when you’re filled with the Spirit of God, the devil, he doesn’t stand a chance.

Because He can’t get in you. He can just… He tries to fill you. But hey, there’s somebody inside of you, born-again Christian, the Holy Spirit of God. He’s in you. Greater is He that is in you than he that is in the world. Oh, Satan, he’ll come try to tempt you and fill you with all these things. No, no, no. Say, “I need to be filled with You, Spirit. I need an extra filling right now.” He can give it to you. He can give it to you.

Many of you heard me of this, and you may have heard it before yourself, and I haven’t heard it—told it in a while, and I’ll try to do the best I can. We’re done. But Corrie ten Boom. How many ever heard of Corrie ten Boom? Back in the day when World War II and the Nazis were coming into—I remember right—Denmark it was, and they were persecuting the Jewish people, and her family, they ran a little watch and clock store there. And they were hiding Jewish people because the Nazis were taking them off to concentration camps and whatnot. And so they got caught. And they—Corrie ten Boom and her sister in particular, I think the dad died pretty quick into it—but the two sisters, they were in a concentration camp. And they did evil, wicked things, of course, that I couldn’t take, but that sometimes those guards would come in and take her sister out and just do horrible things. The war was over. They had made it. Corrie had made it through the war. And years later, Corrie was going across Europe and giving testimony in churches and not preaching, just giving testimonies. And she was giving testimony about how the Lord took care of the hiding place. You ought to read that book, or you can pull up the movie; it’s a good movie about all that, “The Hiding Place.”

But she was giving a testimony about all that, and somewhere in that, she saw one of those guards that did wicked things to her and her sister. She went up there talking about the grace and the love of God, and she saw that man, and boy, all those memories started coming back. And she thought, “Lord, man, I can’t do it. I don’t have it in me.” Then afterwards, you know, after services were over, people coming up to shake their hands, whatnot, and this guard was coming right up to her, and she thought, “Oh, no. Oh, no. I just don’t have it in me.” By the way, you know who was trying to fill her heart? Yeah. But she had someone inside of her, and she says that guard came. He was trying to tell her that he—I remember right—he had gotten saved, and he wanted forgiveness. And she thought, “I can’t. Maybe it was done to me, but to my sister…” Just… And she said both the Spirit of God just automatically took her back to the cross and the nails in Jesus and the stripes on His back, the crown of thorns—all that Jesus went through for her. And the Spirit of God said, “I tell you what, you just lift your hand. Just lift your hand. Just obey Me, and I’ll take care of the rest.” And Corrie didn’t mean, “I can’t do it.” And just the effort of trying to raise her hand to shake that man—he had his hand down trying to. She tried to raise it. And what she said, “I was shocked how the Spirit of God just filled me with forgiveness and love.” And she thought about how messed up he must have been to be able to do those wicked things. She just was filled with love and forgiveness. Why is that? Because greater is He that is in you than he that is in the world trying to fill you with this junk. So when he tries, “Holy Spirit, I yield to You. Would You fill me?”

By the way, Luke 11:13: “If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children: how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him?” Would you bow your heads and close your eyes, please? I’m going to ask—would you do this? Would you just take some time during the invitation asking the Holy Spirit to fill you? If you’re a born-again Christian, would you just ask Him? Maybe say, “Lord, is there some things that are hindering You, that’s quenched You, that’s grieved You?” Boy, when you’re like that, you’ve got a half-filled cup, and the devil loves to fill it the rest of the way up. Oh, would you spend some time tonight? “I want to be filled with You.” We’re going to pray. We’d just spend some time just asking for His filling tonight. Would you please stand? Would you do that right where you are? Father, thank You that we have You, and You’re so mighty and powerful. You can defeat the old devil trying to fill our hearts with this junk. Lord, fill us with You, Your Spirit, Holy Spirit. We yield to You. We want to walk in moment-by-moment yielding to You. And Lord, would You defeat the enemy and help us to overcome even in his strongholds? You bring victory. Fill us with You. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.

As our instruments play, would you spend some time? “Would You fill me, Holy Spirit? Would You fill me?” You ask Him that. Don’t give the devil a foothold. Oh, no. How do you do that? By yielding to the Spirit of God. If He’s convicted about something, say, “I’m sorry. I’m so sorry. You’re right.” Let Him have every control of the Spirit of God. He’ll fill you. He’ll fill you with this junk. You say, “I’ve already grieved and quenched Him.” Oh, He’s so forgiving, so gracious. Spirit of Christ. He’ll go back and get that thing forgiven, get it cleansed, get it under the blood. Natural filling. He’ll fill you.

Amen. So glad you’re here on a Wednesday night. And we’re honored to have some folks back. That’s great. And Wednesday night’s a little bit more of a Bible study. I’m honored to have y’all back, and that’s great. Good to have y’all with us. What a blessing that is. Good to see everybody.
